Eagle Nest, NM
Eagle Nest (one Eagle, one Nest) -- there is also and Eagle Nests (many nests) -- is located central to Taos, Angel Fire, Red River, and Cimmeron, Eagle Nest is located on the Enchanted Circle -- one of the most scenic drives in New Mexico. Noted for a wide variety of ski resorts as well as camping, fishing, hiking, and water sports, this area is a year round destination for tourism.
Many towns in New Mexico are "in the middle of nowhere" but Eagle Nest can best be described as being "in the middle of everywhere". Within 30 minutes - in any direction, you can be experiencing every type of landscape and recreation for which New Mexico is famous. Canyons, gorges, plains, The Great Plains, deserts, lakes, virgin forests, rivers, and high mountains, hot springs -- and every imaginable recreational pursuit associate with each of those locations. That's why the national training center for the Boy Scouts of America is located in Cimmeron.
As Eagle Nest is a "hub", any direction takes you to everything you could want or need. Fine dining and skiing, in Red River -- a big ski resort (17 miles), Angel Fire basics like food and car repair (11 miles) -- and a minor ski resort, Cimmeron - home of the Boy Scouts of America and the main industry; and Taos (22 miles) -- "the New Santa Fe", with anything you could possibly want -- from fine art to education.
Surrounded by the highest mountains in New Mexico and situated beside Eagle Nest Lake, sleepy little Eagle Nest village has, reportedly one of the "best" primary and secondary schools in New Mexico -- last I checked, ranked #2 in the State.
Eagle Nest most recently features a "high altitude" -- 8,400 feet to 13,300 feet -- health, nutrition, and mental training program, where Olympic class athletes train under very basic, natural conditions. They do take locals -- many ladies and people of all ages -- and give them great "local pricing". I personally have joined the program and have literally have one of the best trainers in the world -- being in a world class champion, herself. People are moving to Eagle Nest - just for this program.
The largest "second-hand store" in the region, Angel's Attic, is located here -- a ministry of one of the local churches. Literally anything can be had there -- for pennies on the dollar of what they originally cost -- and things are usually in "good condition". They really do help a lot of people. New couples routinely drive for miles to Angel's Attic -- to "set up a home". Tourist and locals alike just love to shop and look -- and catch up on the local news.
The people of Eagle Nest range from extremes of education and backgrounds -- from all over the country -- and they will all talk to you! Some of them more than you would like. Miners, doctors, cowboys, artists, professors, tour guides, and more, can all be found having conversation at a group of tables. Eagle nest itself originally was know as a "fishing village" with many minimalist buildings for the fishing tourist -- nothing up scale.
Today, even in the current economy, people are still building a variety of home -- from modular housing to luxury homes. In typical New Mexico tradition, you will often find one next door to the other -- in a neighborly environment where some people reportedly "do not lock their doors at night".
Reportedly, Eagle Nest looks more like Alaska than New Mexico -- complete with roaming herds elk and mule dear. Our studio boarders a lake front, high desert wildlife preserve, with migratory birds and animals who visit us and live here, too; and, yes, I mean life here, "in town" -- especially rabbits -- very comfortable with people! Our neighbors include, but are not limited to, hundreds of migratory birds and elk, prairie dogs, coyotes - did I mention rabbits -- raccoons, bears, deer, skunks, field mice, muskrats -- and still counting.
The lake itself is a magnet and sanctuary for birds and currently hosts blue herrings, white pelicans with black wings, Canadian geese, sea gulls, blue birds, humming birds, and -- yes -- the American Bald Eagle and Golden Eagle. For this reason, fishing and bird watching are one and the same sport. Sometimes the air seems to swarm with birds -- of all shapes and sizes.
And then, there is everything in and under the water!

Each of the neighboring towns, above, also have there own websites. Angel Fire and Red River will be of special interest -- as they are so close. Taos is an international destination city, like Santa Fe, and is the cultural and economic oasis of northern New Mexico.
